    PSL(2,7) Representations and their relevance to Neutrino Physics

    The investigation of the role of finite groups in flavor physics and particularly, in the interpretation of the neutrino data has been the subject of intensive research. Motivated by this fact, in this work we derive the three-dimensional unitary representations of the projective linear group PSL_2(7). Based on the observation that the generators of the group exhibit a latin square pattern, we use available computational packages on discrete algebra to determine the generic properties of the group elements. We present analytical expressions and discuss several examples which reproduce the neutrino mixing angles in accordance with the experimental data.Comment: 21 pages, 3 figure

    Towards a realistic Standard Model from D-brane configurations

    Effective low energy models arising in the context of D-brane configurations with Standard Model (SM) gauge symmetry extended by several gauged abelian factors are discussed. The models are classified according to their hypercharge embeddings consistent with the SM spectrum hypercharge assignment. Particular cases are analyzed according to their perspectives and viability as low energy effective field theory candidates. The resulting string scale is determined by means of a two-loop renormalization group calculation.     Inverted neutrino mass hierarchies from U(1) symmetries

    Motivated by effective low energy models of string origin, we discuss the neutrino masses and mixing within the context of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model supplemented by a U(1) anomalous family symmetry and additional Higgs singlet fields charged under this extra U(1). In particular, we interpret the solar and atmospheric neutrino data assuming that there are only three left-handed neutrinos which acquire Majorana masses via a lepton number violating dimension-five operator. We derive the general form of the charged lepton and neutrino mass matrices when two different pairs of singlet Higgs fields develop non--zero vacuum expectation values and show how the resulting neutrino textures are related to approximate lepton flavor symmetries. We perform a numerical analysis for one particular case and obtain solutions for masses and mixing angles, consistent with experimental data.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figure

    The relation between sustainability performance and stock market returns: An Empirical analysis of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index Europe

    This paper investigates the relation between corporate financial performance (CFP) and corporate sustainability performance (CSP). This is done by first analyzing a sample of European stocks that were added to or deleted from the Dow Jones Sustainability Europe Index (DJSI Europe) over the period 2009–2013, and second by analyzing a sample of European stocks that were recognized as industry group leaders in CSP by the DJSI Europe over the same period. The impacts are measured in terms of (abnormal) stock returns. For the first analysis no strong evidence could be found that the announcement of the inclusion and exclusion events has any significant impact on stock return. However, on the day of change (CD) and in the period following CD, index inclusion (exclusion) stocks experience a significant but temporary increase (decrease) in stock return. These results seem to support Harris and Eitan’s (1986) price pressure hypothesis, which postulates that event announcement does not carry information and any shift in demand and hence the corresponding price change is temporary. From the second analysis, on industry group leaders, it can be concluded that the market rewards firms with high CSP. In the period after the day of change, industry group leader stocks experience a permanent and significant positive growth in stock returns. This conclusion can be supported by the resource based perspective, which posits that firms capable of investing heavily in CSP have greater underlying resources which in turn should produce higher financial performance (Alexander and Bucholz, 1978; Waddock and Graves, 1997; Clarkson et al., 2006)

    On the LHC signatures of SU(5)×U(1)′SU(5)\times U(1)' F-theory motivated models

    We study low energy implications of F-theory GUT models based on SU(5)SU(5) extended by a U(1)′U(1)' symmetry which couples non-universally to the three families of quarks and leptons. This gauge group arises naturally from the maximal exceptional gauge symmetry of an elliptically fibred internal space, at a single point of enhancement, E8⊃SU(5)×SU(5)′⊃SU(5)×U(1)4E_8\supset SU(5)\times SU(5)'\supset SU(5)\times U(1)^4. Rank-one fermion mass textures and a tree-level top quark coupling are guaranteed by imposing a Z2Z_2 monodromy group which identifies two abelian factors of the above breaking sequence. The U(1)′U(1)' factor of the gauge symmetry is an anomaly free linear combination of the three remaining abelian symmetries left over by Z2Z_2. Several classes of models are obtained, distinguished with respect to the U(1)′U(1)' charges of the representations, and possible extra zero modes coming in vector-like representations. The predictions of these models are investigated and are compared with the LHC results and other related experiments.     1,2-H- versus 1,2-C-Shift on Sn-Silsesquioxanes

    Lewis acidic zeolites such as Sn-Beta catalyze glucose isomerization to fructose via an intramolecular 1,2-H-shift reaction, a key step for converting lignocellulosic biomass into renewable chemicals. Na-exchange of Sn-Beta titrates the neighboring SiOH group in the open Sn site and shifts catalyst selectivity to mannose formed by a 1,2-C-shift reaction. To probe structure/activity relationships in the zeolite, tin-containing silsesquioxanes with (1a) and without (1b) a neighboring SiOH group were recently synthesized and tested. These molecular catalysts are active for glucose conversion, and the presence (absence) of the SiOH favors fructose (mannose) selectivity by intramolecular H(C)-shift reactions. Using density functional theory, we investigated numerous H/C-shift pathways on these tin-silsesquioxane catalysts. On both 1a and 1b, the H-shift reaction occurs through a bidentate binding mode without participation of the SiOH, while the bidentate binding mode is not favored for the C-shift due to steric hindrance. Instead, the C-shift reaction occurs through different concerted reaction pathways, in which an acetylacetonate (acac) ligand interacts with the substrate in the transition state complexes. Favorable H-shift pathways without SiOH participation and acac ligand promotion of the C-shift pathway explain why 1a produces mannose from C-shift reactions instead of exclusively catalyzing H-shift reactions, as the Sn-Beta open site does
